Betty Schermer
“I decided that I was going to be involved in things for me,” says Betty Schermer of joining the Tri Kappa sisterhood. “Kind of up until then, everything I was involved with was for my kids or my husband.”
After her stints on the Sounds of South parent committee and with Duck Unlimited came to an end, Amanda Burnham and Beth Theile invited Betty to join Tri Kappa at the same time as her best friend, Misti Hays. She enjoys sharing the sorority with Misti, but Betty also likes meeting new people while working on fundraisers.
“I have been really involved with the Blingo Committee, but I just think making cheeseballs is so fun,” Betty laughs. “Tisa Bowden taught me how to make cheeseballs in those big mixers. All that cheese … all those nuts … all those women … it’s just a fun day.”
Betty grew up in Wayne, N.J., but moved to Evansville when she was a teenager. Following her graduation from Harrison High School, Betty attended the University of Southern Indiana for a couple years before transferring to Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.
The Schermers are entrepreneurs, owning four businesses: Steve’s Roofing and Sheet Metal; GS Courtyard Homes; Schemer Investments (commercial properties); and Rockport Investment Co. with Misti and her husband, David.
Betty does admit, however, that she’s about ready to retire, as her son, Griffin, and daughter-in-law, Gretchen, are expecting a baby soon. The Schermers also have a daughter, Kelsey, and son-in-law, Yakob.
Fundraising and spending time with her sisters is what Betty likes most about Tri Kappa.
“I like working together toward a goal,” Betty says. “We don’t all have to think the same and be the same, because it’s our differences that make us a stronger group. Where someone falls short, another takes up the slack. That strength shows in our fundraising.”
