Andrea Cockerham
Andrea Cockerham arrived in Bloomington in 1989 following her graduation from Northwest High School in Indianapolis. She studied journalism and psychology at Indiana University. And, with the exception of a four-year hiatus in California, she has been here ever since.
She had heard a lot about Tri Kappa through the years, so she jumped at the chance to join back in 2013.
“I am just thankful Nancy (Gettinger) asked me to join,” Andrea says. “I like the idea of having a sisterhood and helping the community.”
Andrea especially likes the monthly sisterhood socials – fun activities planned outside of the meetings, like dinner or a movie – and she looks forward to working on the Cheeseball Committee each fall. She has served two, two-year terms as corresponding secretary.
Outgoing and energetic, Andrea really likes to volunteer. She has spent time on the Boys and Girls Clubs Auxiliary and the board of the Monroe County Chapter of the IU Alumni Association. She has served as a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday School teacher at the First United Methodist Church. She was an adult initiate of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She hopes to help out at the chapter house in the near future.
“I just like to do things that I get personal enjoyment from while helping the community,” Andrea says.
Andrea’s college job was at Terry’s Catering in Bloomington. An added bonus to her part-time employment was meeting the owners’ son, Chris. He’s now her husband. A few years ago, Andrea bought into the business. Nowadays, she’s in charge of sales.
She and Chris spend a lot of time watching their sons, Layton and Andrew, play sports. Sharing a home with three men is another reason she enjoys Tri Kappa – she gets to spend time with like-minded women.
“I think Tri Kappa has opened my eyes to a bigger view of the needs of Bloomington,” Andrea says. “It’s given me the opportunity to meet ladies I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
“The meetings are so enjoyable. It’s fun, but you’re also working.”
